Why Kapwa?
A core concept in Filipino social psychology, kapwa is a cultural principle that speaks to a shared identity—a collective “us” that extends beyond the “self” and the “other”. Rooted in indigenous language, kapwa combines ka (relationship) and puwang or pwa (space). In essence, kapwa is about recognizing our common humanity, inherent dignity, and equal worth.
In my consulting work, I apply kapwa by making space for diverse stakeholders—across sectors, roles, and levels of power—to engage authentically with one another, regardless of title, position, or class. This approach leads to more community-driven solutions and a more inclusive impact. It also means centering human stories that transparently reflect the real work happening at the grassroots level.
At its core, philanthropy means “love of humanity.” Yet in today’s world, where division is too often the dominant narrative, those of us within or adjacent to this unique sector have a powerful opportunity to offer a different story— rooted in connection, collective care, and common purpose.
Living in Singapore has given me a ground-up view of its promising trajectory as Asia’s leading philanthropic hub. Kapwa compels me to delve into my own culture’s wisdom of interconnectedness and apply this truth to an evolving sector that seeks to effect sustainable social change, not by operating from the top down or working in silos, but by fostering collaborative spaces of belonging, trust, and co-creation.
